Resources ~ on Applying

Can I meet with a staff member to present a proposal?

Yes, in due course.  Due to our own capacity limitations, staff are not typically able to meet with organizations prior to a concept paper being developed.  We invite you to research Bridgeway's priorities and interests based on the extensive materials found on this website and elsewhere prior to submitting a concept paper.  It is important to follow the 4-step process outlined on the homepage of this website in order to facilitate a future meeting time with staff.

Can I apply for the annual Innovation Award?

No.  Only those current partner organizations which were already awarded a grant in the last fiscal year are eligible to be considered for the Innovation Award.

If our organization is declined, can we reapply? When?

The Grantmaking Committee does not decline applications without a reason.  If your grant application is declined, seek a rationale for this decision from Bridgeway staff.  Information gathered in this way will inform your ongoing engagement with Bridgeway.

Your organization can reapply for partnership with Bridgeway, however, please wait at least one year before a new application is presented.

Do I have to submit a concept paper via email or can I mail it in?

We prefer you to email us your concept paper to info@bridgewayfoundation.ca, with the subject line: CONCEPT PAPER FOR YOUR-ORG-NAME.  Our Administrator will email you back with confirmation it has been received.

Mailed concept papers will also be received, but it will likely take us longer to review them.

Can I send you materials such as cds, dvds, pamphlets, etc. to support my concept paper?

Please do not send these items during the concept paper stage.  If you advance to the full application, these items may have some value and can be sent at that time.  However, use great discretion as we are often overwhelmed by supplementary materials and do not have time to view or consider each item.  Unfortunately these end up being disposed of without our being able to view them, which we consider to be a waste of your organization's precious resources.

May I submit more than one concept paper at a time and have Bridgeway select the project they like best?

Our preference is to receive one only.  Review our priorities and past granting history to determine where we have funding interests.

When and how will we know if our concept paper is successful?

When your concept paper is emailed to our office, the Administrator will email you back with confirmation that it has been received.  Please give us up to four weeks to review your concept paper.  You will be notified by letter if your concept paper is declined.  If successful, you will be notified by email, and your application process will begin.

If you don't hear from us after four weeks have passed, don't hesitate to call our Administrator for an update on the status of your concept paper.

Do you require a CRA number?

Yes, all organizations receiving grants from Bridgeway have a valid CRA charitable number for their organization.

To search for your charitable number, visit the CRA website.

What leads to applications being declined?

The most common reasons for a declined application are the following:

(1)
Project does not propose to measure outcomes effectively;
(2) Project oversells the results it hopes to generate;
(3) Project goals do not align with organization’s mission statement;
(4) Project does not seem strategic in nature, lacks leverage, or scalability;
(5) Organizational health is tenuous in nature
;
(6) Lack of consensus regarding project grant by Bridgeway's Grantmaking Committee;
(7) Organization activities or identity do not align with Bridgeway priorities and interest.

My concept paper was declined. May I speak with the Executive Director to discuss the reasons?

Yes.  Please call to arrange a brief phone appointment.  Unfortunately, due to our capacity limitations, a face-to-face visit is not possible.

How will we know if our application was successful?

Following each Grantmaking Committee meeting, letters stating the decision of the committee will be mailed out to all organizations with projects under consideration.  As well, successful grant applicants will see their grant posted on this website within a few days of the decision.
