Social media connects Dalit children with Canadian donors

Details:
Social media is taking off in popularity, and its appeal is being leveraged by charities. Dalit Freedom Network, a small Surrey BC charity which advocates for India's untouchable caste, leads the pack with a customized web interface that empowers grassroots volunteers and donors to the organization to become fundraisers in their own right.
Dalit Freedom Network has fundraised for and manages 90 schools in India of which 9 are funded by Canadian sources. Bridgeway staff visited three DFN schools in February 2009. The schools are maintained through annual sponsorship of 1,500 children. The organization promotes awareness of the need for Dalit empancipation, seeks funding for new schools, and seeks sponsorships for Dalit children’s education in those schools. Joseph D’Souza, a compelling spokesman, is the main fundraiser visiting Canada approximately twice per year for media appearances, church visits, and missions conferences.
After developing their customized fundraising potential, DFN recognized the need for a full-time employee to manage the growing demand for interactivity with donors online. Bridgeway's grant contributes towards the costs of the social media coordinator.
Bridgeway's Executive Director Mark Petersen developed his own individual fundraising page on the DFN site and is using it to seek support from friends on facebook and other social media platforms to send three Dalit children to school next year.
